Electricity During your Facial Treatment

Electrical Facial Treatments – Galvanic & High Frequency

Have you ever wondered what kind of equipment is used inside a spa room? Or had a facial and wondered what kind of gizmo was being used on your face?
Today’s topic is about some of those cool devices that enhance a facial.
They are known as electrical facial treatments. These two treatments are added to a facial based on your skin needs at no extra charge. During my hour long Custom Facial, more than one machine may be added to your treatment.

GALVANIC CURRENT

A Galvanic device is used to prepare skin for extractions and enhance product penetration.
The Galvanic device emits a direct current that produces a chemical change in skin. (A direct current is different from an alternating current, which is used in electrical outlets.)

How Does Galvanic Work?

So how does a Galvanic device work? I will describe it briefly to keep it simple and not too technical.
1. An acidic or alkaline solution is applied to skin. It depends on what the galvanic device will be used for.
2. Two metal probes are used, the first works on your face, and the second is placed under your shoulder. That second probe creates a closed loop of current so that current flows throughout your body in one direction.
3. The device is turned on, and the current starts flowing. The probe is moved around on the face for a few minutes depending on the goal. Probes come in different shapes. The roller is the most common one. Smaller probes can be used to target areas around the mouth, nose, or eyes.

The current introduces water-soluble ingredients into skin. Chemical changes occur when the current is passed through the skin’s tissues and fluids.
Galvanic can be used before extractions to prep the skin and after extractions to calm the skin. It can also be used to penetrate a mask deeper into the skin.

HIGH FREQUENCY CURRENT

High frequency is a type of current that is used on acneic skin to speed the healing of active breakouts and on very oily skin to dry out the skin.
It has a germicidal and healing effect on skin.
Unlike galvanic, high frequency uses a different type of current – an alternating current(also called Tesla pulse current).

How Does High Frequency Work?

The high frequency machine uses glass probes.
That glass probe is filled with a gas, such as argon or neon. The gas makes the probe glow a certain color when it’s turned on (e.g. violet, orange, red).
Probes come in different shapes to accommodate different areas of the face. The most common one is called the mushroom probe. Smaller probes can be used for focus area such as around the eyes or to target a breakout.
Gauze is placed over skin and then runs the probe is placed on top of the gauze and glides over the skin for a few minutes focusing on areas of concern. There may be a little sparking.
The probe produces ozone gas that kills bacteria inside a pimple. The bacteria that causes acne cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. So ozone (which is a form of oxygen) kills the bacteria.

High frequency can be used after extractions, exfoliation, during massage, or to end the facial.

Not All Facials Include An Electrical Treatment

Electrical facial treatments are useful during a facial. But not all facials include them. It depends on the clients needs that day, the length of the facial, and whether any contraindications (such as metal implants, Braces, etc)may be present. It is important that you answer all the questions in full on the intake form so I know exactly what treatments we have available for your skin.
When coming in for your facial, if you are planning on trying electrical treatments, please remove all jewelry (including earrings).
